Interning in Sydney through Arcadia was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It was not just about gaining work experience but also about learning more about myself, my interests, and how I fit into a professional environment. At the same time, I immersed myself in the beautiful culture and energy of Sydney, Australia.
From the beginning, I set out to accomplish a few key goals: understand how a business operates behind the scenes, ask as many questions as I could, improve my communication skills, and, most importantly, experience everything Sydney had to offer. Over the course of my placement, I was able to achieve all of these and more.
In my role, I was able to experience many aspects of the business world. I contributed to research and presentations on topics like marketing, entrepreneurship, the Myers-Briggs personality framework, Ikigai, and Jungian cognitive functions. I learned how to film and edit videos, create motion graphics, and even helped with a marketing presentation for the companies brand new website. I gained practical skills in graphic design, analytics, and time management which will serve me well in my future career. I was also able to practice old interviewing skills I came into this internship with and practice more with preparing thoughtful questions, handling filming equipment, and producing professional promotional content.
One of the most memorable aspects of my internship and my overall abroad experience was the opportunity to explore beyond the office. I spent time discovering Sydney’s amazing landmarks, lots of local markets, and stunning beaches. I also traveled to Cairns, where I experienced the Great Barrier Reef and Fitzroy Island, and to Newcastle, where I went sand boarding and took amazing pictures with the other girls in the program. These experiences helped along with the internship made me fall more in love with Australia.
One of the most valuable parts of the internship was the chance to explore what I truly enjoy and what I don’t. This self-awareness has helped me shape my career aspirations. I realized that I enjoy working in an office, I’d like to work for a larger company in the future, and I prefer having a shorter commute to work.
Beyond the office, Sydney itself became part of my learning experience which was one of my main goals. From simply exploring the city’s neighborhoods to going to the most iconic sites, I got to know the culture and true life in Australia. It was eye-opening to see how the workplace culture fit into the wider city lifestyle.
This experience has motivated me to continue my professional development, including my aspiration to pursue a Master’s in Business Administration. The skills I learned, the challenges I overcame, and the cultural experiences I had in Sydney have all shaped me into a more confident and capable professional. This has truly been an amazing and rewarding experience and I am grateful for everyone who helped make this possible for me. I will always remember these 6 weeks in Australia and hope to be back very soon!
